"The paradox of education is precisely this- that as one begins to become conscious, one begins to examine the society in which he is being educated." (Baldwin)
Dr. Brandon Foster's journey embodies the paradox of education highlighted in the quote, revealing how increased awareness and consciousness of one's social conditions can fuel personal transformation. Growing up amidst the harsh realities of juvenile detention halls, group homes, and a pervasive atmosphere of low expectations, Dr. Foster began to critically examine the limiting societal framework within which he was placed. This crucial awakening occurred as he encountered dedicated mentors who saw beyond his immediate circumstances his inherent potential. These mentors ignited a spark within him, propelling him from a student ranked 412 out of 437 to an accomplished scholar with a Doctorate from Harvard University. Through this lens of transformed consciousness and achieved excellence, Dr. Foster has dedicated his life to leading the charge in academic excellence, striving to uplift others by fostering environments that nurture potential and defy societal limitations.
Dr. Foster was also recognized as the 2018 "Outstanding Educator of the Year" by the African American Education Archives and History Program. Brandon helped lead two of the lowest-performing schools in the city from an "F" to a "C" rating in two years. As a Regional Director of Instructional Coaching for IDEA Public Schools, he coached first-year Assistant Principals and helped launch two schools successfully.
In 2022, Dr. Foster partnered with the Ferguson-Florissant School District in a suburb of St. Louis, Missouri, for his residency as Special Assistant to the Superintendent. While there, he implemented a project that focused on improving academic achievement through an innovative peer-to-peer tutoring model that leveraged community partnerships to inspire students, teachers, and leaders to reach their highest potential equitably and sustainably. While at Boston Public Schools in 2021, Brandon served on the Leadership Cabinet focused on system changes. He assisted in revamping Credit Recovery and expanded Summer School Programming to provide thousands of students with access to high-quality instruction, experiential learning, and healthier fresh food options.
Dr. Brandon Foster received his Doctorate at Harvard University in 2023 and was a prominent Harvard Teacher Education Program asset. While in Cambridge, he was also a Teaching Fellow under the guidance of Professors Monica Higgins and Pamela Mason. He assisted with designing the course framework for "Leading Change" at the Harvard School of Education. Additionally, Dr. Foster is a highly sought-after speaker, keynote, professional development expert, and a regularly featured thought leader/panelist. He has also consulted for educational nonprofits such as the Coalition of Schools Educating Boys of Color (COSEBOC), Scholastic, and Learners Center Collaborative.
In addition to his school/district leadership experience, Brandon leveraged his passion for educational technology and instructional coaching as an inaugural member of the EdChoice Navigator Network. As a consultant, Dr. Foster has worked with organizations to redesign teaching methods while implementing project-based learning curricula that prepare students to acquire 21st-century learning skills.
